How to Properly Change Your Motor Oil

One of the most important things you can do to keep your automobile running properly is change the motor oil on a regular basis. Every car is unique and different for how often you should perform this maintenance, but a typical length of time is every 3,000 miles or three months, whichever comes first. This is especially important if you have been driving in hot or dusty conditions.

Changing your own motor oil is easy and can save you money, but it can also be dangerous if you do not have the proper equipment or knowledge to do it correctly. You may want to change your oil the first time with a professional or someone who knows what they are doing to ensure you do it correctly. Remember to never pour or drain old motor oil on the ground. Instead, take it to a professional garage.

Along with changing your oil, you should also replace the filter to keep your vehicle running smoothly and to prevent further problems. To change your oil you will need:

Wheel ramps or jack stands to lift your vehicle off the ground A wrench to open the valve and remove the filter A funnel to help drain the oil A recycling container to catch the old oil Rags to catch spills and clean your hands

To change your oil, jack up your car and place an oil pan underneath the oil cap before taking off the oil plug to start draining the old oil. Replace the plug and then remove the old oil filter with a ratchet and screw the new oil filter in by hand (don't over tighten). Use the funnel to pour in the new motor oil, close the cap, and finally lower the vehicle off the jack.
